Chapter 9 (The Almost Kiss)

The boardroom was empty except for them.

The late-night meeting had stretched far too long, leaving only silence and the hum of the city lights outside.

Aisha was gathering her files when Arhan’s voice broke the quiet.

Arhan (calm, low): “You work too hard, Ms. Khurana.”

She didn’t look up. Focus. Don’t let him get too close.

Aisha: “That’s my job, isn’t it?”

He walked closer, stopping right beside her. The heat of his presence made her pulse stumble. He reached for one of the files in her hand, fingers brushing against hers.

Her breath hitched.

Arhan (smirking): “Your job… is to be near me.”

Her heart skipped, but she forced a laugh.

Aisha: “Last I checked, I was your assistant, not your shadow.”

His eyes darkened, his voice husky now.

Arhan: “Maybe I want both.”

For a moment, the world shrank. The distance between them was a whisper. His hand lingered near hers, his gaze fixed on her lips. The air crackled — one move and everything would change.

She swallowed hard. Her training screamed stay away. But her heart whispered something else entirely.

Just when the tension thickened, her phone buzzed sharply. She jolted back, breaking the spell.

It was a coded message from headquarters:

“Target suspicious. Evidence required. Don’t lose focus.”

Her chest tightened.

Arhan tilted his head, amused at her sudden retreat.

Arhan (silky): “Scared, angel?”

Aisha (steadying herself): “Of what, Mr. Malhotra?”

He leaned in closer, whispering.

Arhan: “Of how much you’ll want me.”

She froze, forcing herself to walk away before he could read the storm in her eyes.

Her duty. Her heart. Her secret.

Both were at war now.
